Mindfulness in an Equine Environment

Equine Mindfulness

A mindfulness session held outdoors with the added benefit of horses mingling with the people.

This 75 minute session for just six people and three horses is a blissful experience in nature.

Set in the paddock, your qualified teacher will take you through a guided mindfulness exercise while the therapy horses are around you. Children over 10 years are also welcome to join.

Mindfulness can lower blood pressure, ease stress and headaches, and enhance joyfulness and connection with others. Being with horses can do the same things. When we are with horses, time expands and slows down, leading to being present.

Together, these two activities can bring deep and lasting peace. We call it MEE time which stands for ‘Mindfulness in an Equine  Environment’.

There is an opportunity to pat, brush and connect with the horses during and after the session.

Mindfulness can be like a relaxation session, but it is more holistic. It encourages the mind and body to slow down and to be fully in the now through the use of the senses.

Having horses present allows a further release of relaxation and happy hormones such as oxytocin and endorphins together with a reduction in cortisol and heart rate. There is the added benefit of being in a green space and the views at our paddock are sensational.

You may be deeply relaxed and in tune with your inner peace, breathing deeply, then a horse may gently nuzzle you on the neck, you know the facilitators are watching horses closely for your comfort and security and that these horses are also specially trained to be therapy horses.

This means the horses are used to regulating their own nervous systems, calming down around humans and mirroring and matching the need of the human for space or closeness. Notice with some meditations, you can encourage a horse to come closer, while others you may be able to encourage them farther from you.

Finally, farewell the horses in the way you wish to, you could touch, pat or brush them or perhaps just glance from a distance. It is totally up to you how you finish this unique and relaxing experience.

Prepare to take with you what you have enjoyed and gained.

Minimum 3 participants, maximum 6 per session.
